There is so much more to health and wellness than diet. Other factors, such as, stress, exercise, sleep, and our environment affect our health. Poor diet, lack of sleep, chronic stress, and environmental toxins can lead to inflammation in the body, affecting our health. Achieve optimal health and wellness and feel your best self by implementing these 7 powerful daily habits into your lifestyle!

1. Drink up! We often wake up dehydrated, so try drinking 1-2 cups of water first thing in the morning. Hunger sometimes can be confused for thirst and dehydration. Try to stay away from sugary beverages. A few great alternatives are sparkling water, coconut water without added sugars, or adding fresh fruit.

2. Try packing your lunch and cooking more meals at home instead of eating out. Maybe this looks like taking 5-10 minutes to prep lunch the night before to save time in the morning. I often recommend using any leftover roasted veggies and/or protein, and adding it on a base of leafy greens for an easy meal. When you make your own food, you are in control and know what you’re consuming. Restaurants tend to add excess salt and sugar so that we will want to eat more.

3. Focus on eating more plant-based, whole foods (fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes). Limit packaged and processed foods. See if you notice a difference in energy levels, mood, hunger levels, and satiety.

4. Build movement into your day. Take a break from the computer if your job requires that you sit at a computer most of the day. Walk to the water fountain, take the stairs, walk over to a friend rather than texting them, take a walk on your lunch break. There are many health risks associated with prolonged sitting, so make sure to get moving! I promise you will feel more energized and have more mental clarity!

5. Eat mindfully. Take time to sit down before a meal, visualize your plate, and chew slowly. Studies show that when we are distracted, we eat 40% more than we would normally.

6. Try something new! Maybe it’s a new exercise class, a new recipe, visiting a new coffee shop and cozying up with a book.

7. Establish a nighttime ritual. Turn off all technology devices at least 1 hour before bed. Maybe light a candle, sip on a cozy cup of peppermint or chamomile tea, and grab a book. Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep each night.
