Self-Care
This morning, after my routine of sipping bulletproof coffee and journaling, I left my house to go to a spin class. I had some thoughts that I should just take a rest day, but had some sense of guilt. Such as, “c’mon Becca, its only 45 minutes, you can push through it." I don’t take many rest days, but today was different. I ran 7 miles a few days before and my hips and quads were pretty sore and felt as if I strained a muscle. I still worked out the day after, because I can be stubborn and always feel better after a good sweat. So back to this morning, I pull into the parking lot of the gym, planning to just push through this spin class because it’s lower impact. Sat there for a few minutes in my car, walked around the parking lot, and chose to listen to my body and deep down I knew I should rest. Instead, I drove a minute down the road to the bay and took a nice long walk along the water. This was just what I needed. I ignored those negative thoughts that often are in our heads and did what my body needed. I feel like we are often so hard on ourselves, myself included, and always on the go. I constantly remind myself to take time to slow down.
In today’s society, we are constantly stimulated and pride ourselves for being “too busy”. When you ask someone how they are, often we here too much, “exhausted” or “tired”, “ready for work to be over.” This often comes from overworking ourselves, which is taxing on our adrenal glands. We don't take enough time for self care. It felt so freeing to listen to my body and walk on the bay. This is one of my favorite forms of self-care. It’s my time to relax, listen to the calming waves crash, with the sunshine on my face. There are many forms of self care from taking a bath, listening to a podcast, going out to dinner, exercise. Find what works for you and make time for yourself. You deserve it!
