Bulletproof Coffee
Over the past year, I was introduced to bulletproof coffee. After tasting it and reading about the benefits, I now look forward to this little concoction just about every morning!
It consists of coffee, MCT/brain octane oil (a more potent coconut oil), and grass-fed ghee. Caffeine increases cortisol levels, which is already high in the morning. This can make you feel shaky, anxious, and lead to cravings. Adding fats to coffee slows the release of caffeine into the bloodstream and helps balance blood sugar by lowering that cortisol spike. This will leave you feeling more energized without that crash later in the day.
MCT/Brain octane oil
There are many types of Medium Chain Triglycerides, or MCTs, C12, C10, C8, and C6. Brain octane oil is pure C8 (caprylic acid), making it a potent MCT. It is immediately used as energy rather than going through the liver; and therefore, is known to increase energy, burn fat, and decrease cravings. I have always been fascinated how fats emulsify and thicken when they are blended with liquids. Blending the brain octane oil and grass-fed ghee breaks down into micelle’s, helping to tap into your fat cells for energy. It creates a nice and creamy at home “latte” that is satisfying, filling, and energizing!
Grass-fed ghee
What is ghee? It is a clarified, butter, free of milk proteins (casein and lactose) that many people are allergic or sensitive to. Ghee contains essential nutrients, such as beta carotene, omega-3’s, fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, that help with hormone balance and increase brain functioning. Additionally, grass-fed butter contains butyrate, a SCFA (short chain fatty acid) that helps protect the gut lining and decrease inflammation.
Bulletproof Coffee
8-16 oz of coffee
1/2 teaspoon-1 tablespoon MCT or brain octane oil
1/2 teaspoon-1 teaspoon grass-fed ghee
1 scoop collagen peptides (optional)
optional add ins (coconut butter, coconut oil, cinnamon, nut-milk, stevia)
Add ingredients to a high speed-blender and blend on medium for 1-2 minutes, or until becomes nice and frothy.
**It may take time for your digestive system to get used to, so I would start small with 1/2-1 tsp of MCT oil and ghee.
